Number Talks

As per my inquiry, I have started number talks this term as an introduction to our math lessons.

I start the children either at their seats or on the mat. I show a picture and we discuss what we notice about the picture. The children gave such a wide range of answers that I was quite surprised. Everything from the colour of the pretzels, to the size of the squares. Some thought that some of the squares were circles.

When we got onto counting how many holes there were, children had a whiteboard to show how they got their answer. The answers were very varied and some children were even trying to think of other methods to get the answer so they could share something different.

After explaining this lesson with my mentor, she told me that this was an interesting way to see exactly what stage the children are working at with their maths.

I look forward to using this more regularly in class and getting the children to record their thinking on seesaw so that I have the evidence needed.
